He was born in the Banu Adi community of the Quraish tribe. He is also known as Umar Al Farooq.

'Farooq' means the one who distinguishes between truth and falsehood.

Although he was Rashedin's second caliph in the caliphate, the Shia community did not give him the status he deserved as the caliph of Islam.

Early life

Umar was born in Mecca, present-day Saudi Arabia. His father's name was Khattab Ibn Nufail.

Their family was basically of the middle type. He was educated which was an exception in the Arab society of that time and educated people had different respect.

He was also known as a healthy, strong, brave and especially angry man.

In his youth he was famous as a first class wrestler.

Drinking alcohol was very common in Arabia at that time and according to many narrations Umar used to drink alcohol before he converted to Islam.

But after converting to Islam, he never touched alcohol.

The period of Muhammad (peace be upon him) was the primary enmity of Islam

When Muhammad (peace be upon him) first preached the message of Islam, Umar vehemently opposed him and played a leading role in defending the traditional religion of the Quraish.

He was well known as an anti-Islamist.

And played a steadfast and cruel role in opposing Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Umar was convinced that this new religion, Islam, would cause strife and division among the Quraysh.

To escape the persecution of the Quraish, Muhammad (peace be upon him) told his followers to emigrate to Abyssinia.

The migration of this small group of Abyssinians made Umar fearful and anxious about the future unity of the Quraish dynasty.

As a result, Umar plotted to assassinate Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Conversion to Islam

According to Ibn Ishaq's Sirat, Umar

He planned to kill "Muhammad" (peace be upon him) and one day he came out of the house with a free sword for that purpose.

Along the way, he met a man who had already converted to Islam.

The man told him to take care of his house first before killing the Prophet.

Umar learned from him that his sister Fatima and brother-in-law had converted to Islam.

Qur'an

He went to his sister's house and discovered his sister and brother-in-law reciting verses from the Qur'an.

In a fit of rage, he beats his sister-in-law; When Fatima came to save her husband, she too was injured.

Despite being severely wounded, none of them agreed to leave Islam.

He calmed down when he saw blood on his sister's body and wanted to see what they were reading.

He recited a verse from the Qur'an which was part of Surah Ta Ha.

That verse overwhelmed him so much that he went to Muhammad (peace be upon him) on the same day and converted to Islam.

After his conversion to Islam, he played as much a role in the spread of Islam as he did against Islam before his conversion.

The meaning of Quran.

Emigration to Medina

After the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) instructed the Sahaabah to emigrate to Madinah by the command of Allaah, Omar (ra) emigrated in public with a number of Sahaabah.

He then said in public, if anyone wants to make his mother childless and his wife a widow, let him come forward to stop me.

Because of his great courage and bravery, none of the Quraish dared to stop him.

Umar's life in Medina

In Medina, Omar (R) played the role of a Muslim leader, a companion and representative of the Muslims who migrated from the side of the Prophet (PBUH).

Medina

He was directly involved in the Battle of Badr, the Battle of Uhud, and the Battle of the Trench, which took place after his migration to Medina.

He was one of the members and witnesses of the treaty of Hudaybiyyah He also participated in the conquest of Mecca, the battle of Hunain, the expedition to Khyber, the battle of Tabuk and the Farewell Hajj.

Death of Muhammad (peace be upon him)

After the death of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Omar (peace be upon him) could not easily believe it because of his excessive love for the Prophet (peace be upon him).

And he kept announcing to the people that he would kill those who would spread this news.

But not long after, Abu Bakr (R) came and stopped him and announced the death of the Prophet (PBUH) to everyone.

Abu Bakr (R) restrained his pain and said in a firm voice, "Those who worship Muhammad (PBUH) know that he is dead."

Surah Al Imran

And let those who worship Allah know that Allah is immortal.

And then he recited a related verse from Surah Al Imran.

After hearing this strong statement of Abu Bakr (ra), Omar (ra) got back to his senses and after realizing the truth of the death of the Prophet (sa), he shed tears in indescribable pain.
